The Barbie Movie Premiere Outfits

The highly-anticipated 2023 Barbie film, set to hit theaters on July 21, 2023, will be a live-action comedy based on the Barbie doll franchise. Margot Robbie plays Barbie, and Ryan Gosling plays Ken in the film. It follows Barbie on her journey into the real world, where she discovers that life is not perfect. Many fans of the Barbie franchise have been waiting for this film for a long time, and it appears to be the movie of 2023, along with Oppenheimer, which is set to be released on the same day.

The film's world premiere began on July 9th in Los Angeles and has been characterized by memorable Barbie inspired looks and outfits worn by all the actors and artists who have contributed to the film. Check out some of my favorite looks at the premiere!

  1. Margot Robbie’s 1980s Day-to-Night Barbie Look

At the premiere in Seoul, South Korea, Margot Robbie, who plays Barbie in the film, wore Versace's Day-to-Night Barbie doll dress. The two-piece pink suit can be removed, and the skirt can be reversed into a full dress, making this costume unique. The attire was almost identical to the original 1985 doll, with a pink neck scarf, white hat, pink purse, and a retro glittery phone. The other design, or the "night" look, used the same pink color but transformed into a "party" dress with a sparkling bodice. To add volume, the reversible skirt was composed of layered pink tulle. Along with the many other clothing Robbie wears that look like they belong to a Barbie doll, I believe this one takes the lead in terms of creativity, theme, and ingenuity.

2. Issa Rae’s President Barbie Dress

Issa Rae, an American actress, plays President Barbie in the new film. She looked the part in a Marc Bouwer floor-length pink velvet gown. The dress was not only on the Barbie theme, but also depicted her role in the movie which was inspired by Michelle Obama, the First Lady of the United States. The dress's details-a huge bow, sequined fabric, pointed shoulders, and a keyhole cutout-were designed to resemble Barbie while also reflecting Rae's personality as a strong leader. Her makeup artist, Joanna Simkin, created a monochrome look with pink eyeshadow similar to that of Barbie dolls. Her hair was also styled in a high layered ponytail for a Barbie effect.

3. Margot Robbie’s 1960s Black Dress

Margot Robbie wore a replica of 1960 Barbie "Solo in the Spotlight" dress by Schiaparelli, a Haute Couture fashion house, to the Los Angeles premiere. The dress was constructed of a black shimmering and sparkly fabric with layers of black tulle at the bottom. A hand-painted embroidered rose sat on the bottom hemline of the frock, and Robbie carried a pink fabric napkin in her hand. The clothing was a complete makeover of the 1960 Barbie and was unlike any other outfit she had worn. This was the one of the first outfits in the premiere worn by a cast member that did not use the pink color palette. Fans were also taken aback by the abrupt change in color scheme, as Barbie normally wears pink, however Robbie’s look stayed true to the essence of Barbie and barbie-core, even representing an iconic Barbie doll. This outfit is one of my favorites and a fan favorite because of the color scheme change, yet it still matches the concept.

5. Shay Mitchell’s Vintage Dress

Shay Mitchell, a Canadian actress who will appear in the film, put on a vintage black and white minidress to the premiere in Los Angeles.  Her look was influenced by classic Barbie dolls as well as Shushu/Tong's  2023 "Pretty Woman" collection. The length, corset-like waist, and white off-the-shoulders gave the dress a 60s vibe. Mitchell was also carrying a little black purse inspired by the brand's collaboration with Barbie on travel accessories. Even with the contrasting color scheme from the other cast members, this dress looked stunning on the carpet.

5. Dua Lipa’s Butterfly Dress

Dua Lipa, an English and Albanian singer/songwriter, has written and produced songs for the Barbie film. She arrived at the premiere wearing an attire with both her own and Barbie's signatures. Her maxi sequin gown was covered in butterflies, symbolizing her love of butterflies, and she wore it with blue butterfly strappy heels. Her dress was also from her Versace collection, and it was paired with a gold Versace necklace and rings. The renowned Barbie hairdo was created with a smooth high ponytail. The stunning dress not only advertised the film, but also her songs, which I thought was clever.

6. Ryan Gosling’s Pink Suit

While Ryan Gosling, who plays Ken, wears a plain and classic suit, the color pink makes an impact. The Barbie movie, his part, and his "Ken-energy" were all conveyed by his pink Gucci suit, light pink button-down, and white shoes. This style is also significantly different from his prior red carpet appearances, as he usually wears black or dark-toned suits. In addition, the clothing makes a statement because the color is "feminine" and many people argue that "real men" do not wear pink. Gosling's outfit demonstrates that everyone, regardless of gender, can wear pink and shows that he is comfortable in his masculinity while wearing the “feminine” color which Margot Robbie, his coworker, also said in an interview.
