2023 Cannes Film Festival
The Cannes International Film Festival, annually held in the charming city of Cannes, France, has been a distinguished celebration of cinema that showcases a variety of international productions. The festival first started in 1946 and since then has advanced into an influential and prominent event in the film industry.
The 12-day Cannes Film Festival draws a wide range of directors, performers, business people, and movie critics from all over the world. The festival provides a venue for the showcasing of diverse productions from documentaries to musicals, that represent many genres and cultural origins. It is well known for its dedication to artistic innovation and prestige, supporting both established and rising talent.
Works and productions compete in the festival’s competitive section for the Palme d’Or honorable award. The festival not only showcases extraordinary films, but also elaborates red carpet ceremonies where the world’s most renowned and famous celebrities grace the occasion with their presence. This year marked the 76th Cannes Film Festival, and the celebrities and actors did not disappoint on the red carpet.

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence, one of the most paid American actresses seen in The Hunger Games and Don’t Look Up, showed up to the Cannes Film Festival in a Dior red gown. The Christian Dior Couture dress was paired with a matching shawl and a Dior necklace. This outfit was one of the most iconic dresses on the runway because of the black flip-flops Jennifer Lawrence wore. For years celebrities (women) were required to wear high heels. In 2015’s Cannes Festival, women were denied entry if they wore flats. Lawrence breaks the dress code and makes a fashion statement. Some people believe this might be the newest fashion trend!
Elle Fanning

Elle Fanning, an American actress most famous for her roles as Sleeping Beauty in Maleficent and Catherine in the tv show, The Great, wore a beautiful tulle dress by Alexander McQueen. The dress’s bodice has metallic beads and crystals all hand embroidered. The bodice is inspired by an orchid vine which is intricately shown through the decorations. It is put together with a light pink tulle skirt which represents delicacy. The dress all together is meant to symbolize “beauty and strength” together and is definitely shown in contrast to the structure of the bodice with the free flowing skirt.
Dua Lipa

The international-hit singer, Dua Lipa, is known widely for her mainstream songs, “New Rules”, “Levitating” and “Don’t Stop Now”, showed up to the Cannes’ red carpet in an elegant black cutout dress by Hedi Slimane. She paired this look with silver diamond earrings, a bracelet, and heels from Tiffany & Co. This look is completely different from her previous runway outfits. Dua Lipa usually shows up in bright/metallic clothes and draws inspiration from clothes in her music videos. The black slit dress she wore to the film festival contrasts these outfits and gives a gothic look which is also shown in the wispy bangs.
Sofia Carson

The American singer and actress, Sofia Carson, who is most famous in her movies Descendants and Purple Hearts wore a red strapless Elie Saab Haute Couture gown to the film festival. Her dress had pleated ruffles of silk made for a crinkled effect. Carson says on her Instagram with the caption, “Sophia Loren wore this necklace, and today I had the honor of wearing it to walk the Cannes red carpet” referring to the choker on her neck. It was worn by Sophia Loren, an Italian actress, and Sofia Carson was named after her by her grandmother. Carson wanted to show the impact of powerful women in the film industry by wearing this necklace.
Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman, the Israeli-American actress most famous in Black Swan, Leon, and Thor, made her appearance in a beautiful custom-made Dior dress. The dress is a recreation of a famous Christian Dior collection, the Junon dress (shown on image to the right). “Junon” became popular due to its breathtaking skirt. The skirt of the dress is meant to represent peacock feathers and flower petals in layers and is made by a transparent tulle. Intricate beadings and embellishments were added on to replicate the 1949 creation. She paired her look with diamond earrings, white platform heels, and a slicked back hair-do.
